these are the bad guys, use imgburn tools/filter to kill them, reboot and test with an imgburn burn

      Removing...

Thanks! If I remove pinnacle studio, will it not run? I use it a lot for home movies. I removed it and when I re-booted it asked if i wanted to install drivers for Pinnacle.

Great link Chewy. I didn't know the problems can mimic a bad drive.

So redbook and imapi are common filter and should be there? That is all I have when checking with ImgBurn.

redbook may be legacy support for audio in some way and the imapi must be associated with native cd burning in xp

both are supposed to be safe to delete but I leave them

I do disable the imapi service tho

we've fixed many broken drives that way, one guy kept returning his drive and getting another
I think on the third one we killed some driver and it mysteriously started working

I checked to make sure and I already had imapi disabled too.

I see why you don't like to give up on a drive unless you know it's toast.

                    Opinion on external dvd writer

Hello, I have such intermittent problems with my hp media center dvd writer, I may buy an external writer to see if that solves my problems. I can't determine if it's 2 programs conflicting or if it's the drive. My question is, can anyone recommend a brand? I want to be able to also use it for my laptop which would be usb, but would prefer firewire capability connection since my laptop and desktop both have firewire. Thanks!!!!

if something is hosing your burning with imgburn and you have removed the extra filters, I would think about reloading the computer, but it's probably the drive, since it's off warranty? I would just buy another internal drive. They are cheap.

firewire ones are hard to find so you can't get as much selection

Thanks a lot for the info. I thought about an external one so it would be easier to return to store if i continue to have burn problems. I have a feeling there are software conflicts somewhere. Can a "normal, not too techy" person install these?

opening the case is the hardest part on some computers, may take me
5-10 minutes to figure that part out

I pull the ribbon cable(ide), power cable and take out the 4 screws, slide the old drive out, note the jumper setting on the old drive , set the new drive to the same, reverse all the previous steps.

                          piece of cake

Great, thanks! Is it possible that it is not a bad drive if i can burn music CDs? I burned several of those today without any problem.

dvd burning usually dies before cd's or at least it's common
