Maybe I´m stupid now - but could my problems be caused by the fan? Is it important that it functions properly during a burn? The fan obviously has some problems. Every time I turn on the computer it sounds like a whole truck. I can hear the fan in the whole house.

has it burned a lot of dvd's

and yes if the computer overheats that might cause problems

take the side off the case and point a small fan into it and check?

                  I don´t think that it´s considered a lot of dvd´s. I only burn for family use, I think about 50 dvd´s.

I´m gonna try with a fan, another day... But anyway it´s a bit strange, since the fan has been acting like this for quite a long time, but the burning has worked fine anyway. So maybe it´s the lens. What´s the best way to clean it by the way?

some use a cd/dvd cleaner, some a long cotton q tip, I use compressed air

another thought, try unhooking the power to the noist fan and see if it's pulling your voltage down, dvd burners take a lot of power

50 dvd's is not very many

if the inside of your case is dirty the dvd burner may be also

Thanks for all your help. I´ll keep on searching for whatever causes my problems. First of all I´m gonna try cleaning the lens.

I still think you are having heat problems. You say when you start up your computer the fan is very loud, likely smothered in dust.
Has the computer ever been opened up and cleaned out properly?

I haven´t opened it up, since I still have warranty on it. It´s only 1 1/2 year old. Maybe the best thing is to just get it fixed, but they always format the drives, and I really don´t feel for it right now.

I still think that the main problem is the burner/lens. The burner has begun... hmm what´s the word... every time I put a disc in it it takes up to one or two minutes before the computer asks what to do, or opens a program. It kind of gets stuck. Makes some strange clicking noise. Difficult to explain (my terrible English)...

Now I´ve got my computer back, they switched the burner to a new one. I´m gonna try to do the first burn now...

But a question - the burner they took out had this label:

                            <HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B>Version: 1.05

The new one they put in has this:

                            NEC DVD RW ND-4550A

Is it a better one, or a cheaper?

It sounds like version 1.05 was the firmware, which if I am correct needs updating but you might want to wait on somebody like Chewy or NightTran to confirm. What is the firmware on this drive? You can check in either Dvd Decrypter or ImgBurn, just look in the right hand window.

Sorry... I missed a few letters in my last post... It wasn´t supposed to say "Version: 1.05". The burner they took out had the following label:

                                HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B>Version: 1.05

And the new one is this:

                                NEC DVD RW ND-4550A
