Bad DVD backups created but getting no errors

welcome to the forum

until you get the bugs out of the backup process, working with iso's is dangerous, they are hard to play without a few extra steps or the right combination of drivers.

those series disks are always packed full and your file size from shrink should be a full dvd, yours is very small

If you had saved as file output not iso this would have been obvious when you checked shrink's output before burning

Looks like dvdshrink could not handle this on it's own?

Doesn't look like a media or burning problem

Thanks for the feedback Chewy. This has been really frustrating.

The reason that the ISO is so small is that I used the "Re-author" feature in DVD Shrink to try to back up a single episode with no compression (to make the process as simple as possible to try and isolate the problem). The ISO that's created via this process loads and plays fine using the "Open Disk Image..." feature in DVD Shrink, so it seems like the ISO that is being created is OK. As a side note, I do get the different errors in DVD Shrink (e.g., "Invalid access to memory location", "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.") when attempting to shrink an entire DVD (i.e., decrypted set of files). I have had no success in solving these issues with the info in the DVD Shrink Error Code FAQ, and this is another reason that I reverted to a simple uncompressed ISO of a single episode.

What are the "few extra steps" that are needed to play a DVD created via an ISO?

using reauthor with shrink make dvd files, and check playability with MediaPlayerClassic, powerdvd, etc

then you know that part's ok, you should be able to fit 3 or 4 episodes on one single layer dvd

have you been doing a full erase on the rw before burning to it?

Installed MPC, but I get the "Cannot render the file" error. This looks like the problem discussed at length at http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=69132. It suggests installing Nero to correct the problem, but I have Nero installed already. I'll try to locate and install powerdvd to see if the ISO can be played via that tool.

That said, it's my understanding that DVD Shrink will play non-compliant ISOs, but since I'm using DVD Shrink to create the ISO, is it safe to assume that it's creating a compliant ISO?

best not to assume anything when you are just getting started

Try VLC Media Player or try downloading ffdshow to help Media Player Classic.

Tried VLC Media Player, and it is also unable to open the file (player window expands for a few seconds without playing anything and then returns to static state). Should it work without any external plug-ins (or custom configuration), or does it require helper apps (like ffdshow)? When looking at the ISO via Windows Explorer, it doesn't look like there's been a file association between VLC and ISO files, but this may be expected behavior.

Does this indicate that the ISO is bad or do the players need further troubleshooting/tweaking?

In response to Chewy's question above, I've tried doing the burn w/ virgin +RWs as well as +R media, and I get the same bizarre behavior.

Again, the help is really appreciated.

if you have good RW media or spend one good disc burn to it first then put that burn disc back in and use ripit4me and ripit again this iso after ripit fixvts and shrink you should be able to watch by VLC

Sorry for not getting back on this sooner (out of town for a couple of days). Should have thought of this sooner, but asked a friend to see if he could burn a disk using the image that appeared to be good. The resulting DVD exhibited the same strange behavior. It looks like the image that played fine via DVD Shrink had serious issues, so the problem appears to have occurred further upstream in the backup process. If I can't isolate and resolve the problem, I'll take it up in one of the other forums.
