I don't know if this is related, but I have problems with DVD+DL in an LG burner too. The type is GSA-H20L with latest firmware 1.02.

I use Verbatim as it is recommended for Double Layer.
I didn't get any errors during the burning in ImgBurn. The log said: "successfully completed" but the disc is totally unreadable. It's also unreadable in both my burners LG GSA-H20L and Plextor PX-755A, and in my PX-755A in my other machine (yes, I have 3 ).

Then I burned another disc (same brand) in my Plex and this one works fine. I started burning in the LG as I found out earlier that the LG has better write quality than the Plex for my single layer Taiyo's. But, it just seems as if LG burners doesn't like double layer very much.

Oh, and me is just me, I forgot to set the booktype in both burners
So I did set it for both burners and gave it another shot. Result: the disc that I burned in the LG is now visible in the LG itself, but still unreadable in the Plextor. The Plex makes a ticking sound and refuses to show something.

So, no more DL burning in LG for me. Two expensive coasters is enough.

      One more thing...
After I burned another Verbatim DVD+DL at 2.4X in my Plex, the speed they are certified for, I found out that the disc was stuttering in my standalone.
I noticed in ImgBurn that 4X is supprted, even though the label shows 2.4X.
So I tried one at 4X and ... this one doesn't stutter anymore. I guess I found the right writer/media combination.

Sorry to hear about your problem Calimari. My 4163B is performing flawlessly. Perhaps you need to RTM your drive.

You should only use genuine Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. Many thanks to www.pcx.com.au for their supply and great service.

            ReturnToManufacturer?

over here we just say RMA

            but if it's off warranty?

Pioneer 112's do a good job with dual layer

The Plex is already RMA'd How did you think I got two of them lol.
Anyway, they both give me the same result, so I don't think there's something wrong with them.
For the LG burner, I saw other threads (different forums) where users seem to have problems with DL.
I've read some good things about the Benq1655 though. Is this drive still available? I found a few online stores but the latest prices were dated 2006.

Oh, and my last testdisc, the 4X on the Plex, does stutter!

we have been seeing some dual layer failures here with verbatim and the benq drives also

are you sure your power supply is adequate?

I doubt it's the PSU. Both Plextors give the same (bad) result. The first is in a machine with a 350 Watt PSU, the second machine has a 450Watt.

well I took a little statistics and probabilty at the academy and 3 burners giving bad results is statiscally significant

Unless you paid an arm and a leg for a 350 watt power supply it won't do much more than burn cd's

a 450 watt is OK if the burner gets enough power and it's not all used by fans and hard drives

                    dual layer takes more power

jmet once posted about problems he was having and went out and bought
a brand name premium +100$ power supply to install in an older computer
                    his problems went away

I have a premium 430 watt thermaltake and when I hook a third hard drive up
it's not even detected by the raid bios

The 350 Watt was built in a machine I bought all-in. Of course, you get the cheapest components then.
Anyway, I give up on DL. I've wasted half the price of a new drive on DL-coasters. I'll skip this one (a non DVD Video) and go on with SL Taiyo's, which give me very good results in the LG drive.

Thank's for your time and efforts.

single layer burned slow is safest with weak power

doubt my 1 1 /2 yer old power supply could handle a 16x copy on the fly anymore
