Thanks - actually, it wasn't where the link said - had to search it and it was actually in application data - go figure. Anyway, each time I try and burn a disc, I get illegal disc error. Here's the log - might be some extra stuff (sorry) when I tried to just make an image, but I don't know where to separate:

I would say read & use The Golden Rules, especially when they refer to Firmware, Burn Speed & blank media to use. DMA does not come in to play for an external drive.

Thanks - is updating the firmware dangerous? Also, I don't seem to have a choice to lower the burn speed.

Would my best bet to try other media first?

If I download the firmware from here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2175 - which do I choose, i.e. pso4, pso5, etc.? The log says pso1 - but that's not a choice. Do I just pick the one with "new" after it - and the reason mine isn't there is 'cause it's so old?

One more thing - just tried with a dual layer disc that burns @ 4X (as opposed to the other that burns at 16X) and it worked! Does that answer anything?

those ritekF1's are not good disks, but upgrading your firmware is a necessity, especially if you are using the first version xxx1, xxx9.. xxxa...

download and extract psob, and update empty drive, but be sure and have all processes/apps turned off

there's always an option to set burn speed, look on the burn tab when you hit backup, gotta have a disk in tho

lower burnspeed to 4x or 6x

              use better media also

Thanks Chewy!! Just so I understand - 1. From the report you see, the single layer discs I was using are ritekF1's?

                2. I need to upgrade the firmware to the latest, i.e. PSOC?

PSOC was withdrawn, probably wasn't ready use PSOB

                  Disc Manufacturer: RITEKF - 1
hit or miss blanks and with that early firmware for the liteon, mostly miss

might get some good burns with them after you update
