I would say read & use The Golden Rules, especially when they refer to Firmware, Burn Speed & blank media to use. DMA does not come in to play for an external drive.
Would my best bet to try other media first?
If I download the firmware from here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2175 - which do I choose, i.e. pso4, pso5, etc.? The log says pso1 - but that's not a choice. Do I just pick the one with "new" after it - and the reason mine isn't there is 'cause it's so old?
One more thing - just tried with a dual layer disc that burns @ 4X (as opposed to the other that burns at 16X) and it worked! Does that answer anything?Last edited by loopyloops; 2 Apr 2007, 04:17 PM.Comment

Thanks - is updating the firmware dangerous? Also, I don't seem to have a choice to lower the burn speed.

those ritekF1's are not good disks, but upgrading your firmware is a necessity, especially if you are using the first version xxx1, xxx9.. xxxa...
download and extract psob, and update empty drive, but be sure and have all processes/apps turned off
there's always an option to set burn speed, look on the burn tab when you hit backup, gotta have a disk in tho
lower burnspeed to 4x or 6x
use better media alsoComment
