HELP with my Nero error message.....PLEASE

I have never had any problems using my DVD burner.....now everytime I try, it crashes just prior to the start of the burn process (it finishes the cache.... says the burn process is starting..... sits there for awhile and then crashes)

here is my error message.....its all Greek to me and any help would be greatly appreciated - i'm desperate

    welcome to the forum

your firmware is at least 2 years old

according to this page they released a 1.0F this year

    I would update

if that doesn't help your burner may just be wore out, there is another issue, there are some problematic drivers

we can address them if the firmware does not help

nero letting you choose a dvd+r burn speed for dvd-r is not a good sign

THANKS so much for the extremely quick response

......I downloaded the firmware update and it worked!!!!!!!! I was able to back-up my DVD no problem

......BUT when I tried to use the burner again it crapped out - same error message as I submitted earlier (same exact problem - stalled out after caching, right at the start of the burning process)

so - any thoughts....seems weird that it would work once. The burner is less than a year old - sure hope I dont have to ask Santa for another one already.

EDIT: the first attempt (when it worked) I could hear the burner rev'ing up before the burn process started.....it rev'd several times and then started burning. When the process fails there is no rev'ing.....it just fails (like it doesnt even try to start the burn)

EDIT #2: AND after a failed burn I cant eject the DVD....I have to reboot to open the drive

since that's a benq 1640(sony hasn't made burners in years) and the 1640 was a great burner we might try a few extra steps, check the power and ide cables, they are in good shape, make sure the burner is the closest to the power supply(connector), try disconnecting the slave device, the sony cdburner(Uck!)

still using the original power supply?

Alright....finally got a little free time to try your suggestions.

I opened up the CPU and disconnected the CD burner....connected the DVD burner in the slot closest to the power supply (yup - still using the original).....left the CD burner disconnected....and tried using the burner again

......no luck - exact same problem as above

......so do you think I should be adding a new burner to my X-Mas list???? (it seems REALLY weird to me that the same drive will play games and burn pictures/music to a CD but won't work for DVD's)

          ......any more thoughts?

well it's down to 2 items left

if it burns cd's at a fast speed then we know the power supply is strong enough to burn dvd's at a slow rate

technically, burning dvd's is a lot more complicated so that usually goes bad first

I hope you opened the tower not the cpu(processor)

but we have those problem drivers I mentioned

sonic is like a cancer, you have to cut it out completely, it goes deep in the registry

well the safest thing to do is buy a new dvd burner but then you won't know whether it's bad or those filters are?

of course if it works(the new dvd burner) you then can pretty well conclude the old was bad

I hate this guessing and try to keep that crap off my computers

might just be the main culprit
