Nero Error burning DL

My 'moniker' ("just trying to learn") says it all. There are many, many on this board who are infinitely more knowledgeable than I, and I'm sure they'll chime in on your question. For what it's worth, though, one of the first things I DID learn on this forum is that Ritek discs are crappola. I learned it the hard way, after purchasing 200 of the single layer ones and unnecessarily purchasing a new burner because I had created so many coasters - not realizing that it was the Ritek discs that were at fault until others on this forum 'set me straight'.

I was really hoping someone could help me interpret my log file, but maybe the thing to do is to try different media.

The only reliable disc to use are Verbatim 2.4X made in Singapore.
The only reliable burning program to use is ImgBurn.

I also suggest you download and use ImgBurn, a free program (although I suggest that you make a donation to encourage its continuing development). Instructions for its use are on this forum, and you'll really come to LOVE the progam.

Thanks to all who replied.

I mentioned that I had never had problems with Memorex, and now I was having issues. Turns out, the media code on my older Memorex DVD DL disks is [RITEK][D01]. This new batch that is giving me trouble has a code of [RITEK][S01]. So I've learned the hard way what I've always read about - that branding can be meaningless - these companies get different batches from different sources, and so quality varies.

I bought some Verbatims, and now, no more errors. Their media code is [MKM][003] and the page here (http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm) lists them as "1st class" media.

I used to have a Plextor DVD-burner that rarely made a bad burn. When I upgraded to a Benq dual-layer burner, I realized that the disks I had used with my Plextor were now always getting bad burns in my Benq. They were Playo brand. (I know they're cheap, but hear me out). At that point, I found that the Memorex DL disks seemed to work okay with my Benq, and so I bought that brand exclusively for over a year. Now, after having bought two new spindles of these Memorex disks, I learn that they are not identical to the previous ones I had been using. These new ones are useless to me.

I understand crap media may not last as long. I know that the dyes and coatings vary, and crap media cuts corners, etc. But what I don't get is why every time I upgrade a burner, it seems to be more picky than the last. I don't understand why a bad burn is the necessary result of bad media.

For example, as I said, my previous Plextor burner never complained about media. Sure, maybe it was crap, and in 5 years when I go to play one of those disks, maybe I will realize there has been some degradation of data, and maybe the thing won't play. It was low-quality media, I get it. But at least my Plextor got the data on the disk, and it worked for a little while.

It seems my Benq is more picky about what type of media it tries to burn to. I realize, of course, in the long run, this can be seen as a good thing -- it ensures I only use high-quality media. But I don't get why my Plextor would at least get the disk written, when my supposedly higher-quality Benq just says "no dice". Suppose I'm an idiot that wants to burn with bargain basement media all the time. It should at least write to the disks. Over time, maybe the disks fall apart. Then it's my fault for buying cheap media. But I don't understand why my Benq won't at least get the data on there, like my Plextor always did.

A poor analogy, but I think of casette tapes. Back in the day, you could buy cheap "normal-bias" tapes. There would be all kinds of hiss and noise, and lack of high-end, but any recorder would record to it. The result of your buying cheap media was it sounding poorer. But the tapes worked. Using that analogy, it's as if my Benq insists that I *must* use the DVD version of a high-end, chrome metal-oxide coated, high bias casette.

Additionally, consider this -- given that I've learned my Benq only seems to accept high-quality media, what do I do when I realize that I have a bought a batch of disks it rejects? Is it fair to take them back to Best Buy and say "they won't work in my burner"? This is, of course, after I have had to have a couple of bad burns to learn this. (Or at least I have already had to open the package to check the media code, before even burning).

Sorry for the long post, it's just frustrating that I have to waste money buying various brands blindly to see which will work. Oh sure, I know, get the ones made in Singapore, etc.... but what if I want to buy disks online? With the ways that branding is almost irrelevant, given all the possible origins of the media within, it seems you just have to buy blindly, hit-or-miss style until you find one that works.

Anyone want two almost full spindles of Memorex disks?

Are there any online stores that list media codes of the disks they are selling? That, to me, seems like the only solution. Rather than having a brand name that you hope will be the same as the last time you bought it, you'd have a media code that you know unquestionably works in your player, regardless of the brand on the packaging.
