Are you trying to play a commercial DVD? If so, what region is the Disk?

Try "Ripping" the DVD to your HD with "DVD Decrypter", SmartRipper" or "DVDShrink". These programs can make your ripped copy region free.

I tried using Smartripper and it stopped and display an error message saying "some files are still locked, try unlocking them with a player", and DVDShrink displayed a error message "Failed to red from file : the reason is Copy Protection Error The Currents DVD Region does not correspond to the region setting of the driver"...................
          still wont work
          thanks

If your player is locked on region 4, you might need to use some sort of region free software. There are several available. I have been happy with DVDIdlePro, which in effect resets the region of your player and makes every DVD disk appear to be multi-region.

Launch a "Software" player such as WinDVD or PowerDVD and start playing the DVD. Minimize the software player and then launch SmartRipper. It should unlock the disk and read it successfully.

I use SmartRipper and DVDIdePro with PowerDVD and never had a problem. But re-reading your problem again, it might be related to drivers. There is something called ASPI that you might need, but I am not familiar with the particulars of drivers, so you might want to wait for some one else to help you with that. But in the mean time, try getting PowerDVD and see if the problem persists.

i tried powerdvd with dvd idle and got the exact same problem, so it must be something related to aspi then,
                      can anyone help me?

SmartRipper needs an installed aspi layer (correctly installed). Go to Adaptec's website and download the v. for your O.S. (98, XP, etc.). Then do a search engine search for the free proggie "force aspi". and install, etc.. Also, go to winzip.com for the free beta file extractor to extract the Adaptec aspi layer(s)..

Then re-boot your rig, start the dvd player software, start ripping with smart ripper or dvddecrypter.

A link to Adaptec aspi layers can be found @ the downloads section @ the official DVDDecrypter site.

98 seems to work best with aspi by Adaptec v. 4.6.

XP seems to work best w/ v. 4.71.2.

On Xp , 'decrypter can rip without an aspi, as 'decrypter can also use the SPTI of XP.

Right, QP's got it. That's what I did to fix my similar problem. Try it.

I have many foreign dvd movies which are difficult to rip.

You did not say whether you tried to rip with dvddecrypter v. 3.1.9.0. 'Decrypter dooes not need an aspi layer on an XP, NT or 2000 system.

Did you ever try to rip the movie with DVDDecrypter. You do not need to open the movie with a software player with dvddecrypter if you have one of the above-mentioned systems. Even if you have 98 O.S., still try to rip with dvddecrypter and post results. It sounds like you did not double click the kill aspi and then dump aspi, etc. and then install aspi and re-boot as the instructions say to do. Did the check aspi show the "green" which means proper install. You see the aspi is how the dvd drive communicates for ripping and burning.
