@end of tether with skipping DVD playback

I know this topic has been covered many times before probably, but i cannot seem to rectify this fault.
One of you wizards out there must know the answer to this!

    Machine spec -
    AMD k63-400 , 384mb sdram.
    Gigabyte 5Ax motherboard.
    Aopen 1040 PRO DVD player.
    NIVIDA TNT2 M64 (32mb) AGP graphics.

    Running WinDVD2000 or PowerDVD.

    Latest drivers installed, directdraw7 etc.
    DMA switched on ,etc.

All playback discs are brand new (no scratches etc)
    Skipping is occuring constantly.

Thought i had identified a problem when i realised soundcard (1024 live) was sitting on the same IRQ as the graphics.
Rectified this - but no change, skipping just as bad.

I have also tried a voodoo3 AGP card with latest drivers, no difference.

Is it the processor? I have been told that this is man enough for the job.

    Is it the graphics card?

There seems to be a bottleneck somewhere.

Don't know what else to try, short of changing the graphics card/CPU? but don't think i should have to.

    HELP! (please!)

i guess you do have the latest chipset driver installed, since you said dma is on!?!?!

it is NOT the vga, it is the cpu!

i did have similar probs until going for an athlon 700 approx two years back.

some titles might run better, others very poor. you better think of upgrading if possible, eggyardk!
