Can't turn CC off

I was watching my ORIGINAL pressed DVD of Spy Game (Redford, Pitt) last night, and the closed captioning kept appearing. Nothing I did would kill it, but it would come on & go off for no apparent reason. The disk isn't scratched or smudged, and the player (JVC XV-FA95) doesn't do this on any other disk (pressed or burned). I even ejected it & restarted the movie, but it did the same thing. The disk menu structure has a selection to turn CC on, but not off. It only has "No subtitles", which I tried repeatedly, but this was definitely English CC; not subtitles. Even selecting CC had no lasting effect.

Does anyone have any ideas why, or how to stop it?

I still suspect subtitles. The come and go indicate they are "forced subtitles", which can display during foreign language scenes. Another thing is that subbies can be turned on in the VOB if a forced start code is encountered (irrespective of if you have them selected - the best example of this are menu highlights).

To be sure if these are subbies or CC, check out the DVD in DVDSubEdit - get it here. You'll soon see what's there. Do take the time to read the user guide - it will give you very good insight into subpix.

Can you also post your IFOs please?

What format do I use for the IFOs? The preview reply page doesn't list raw .IFO as an acceptable attachment format. I ripped it to get this shot of the menu page, so I have them on the HDD now, but remember: it's the original that won't play right.

Hmmm... I'm still recovering & reinstalling after my last HDD crash (see the "...image the OS HD..." thread in General Computing), and I don't have a ZIP utility installed yet (Win2KPro), so I can't even unzip SubEdit at the moment. Gimme a few minutes...

Wow. 7-Zip isn't the easiest thing to use, and it's gonna take me a while to read up on SubEdit before I understand how to navigate it & find anything useful. I could only see the Spanish subtitles, but I don't know that I loaded the right VOB.

It's not as intuitive as PKZip & WinZip, but I did figure out how to open & create .ZIPs with it.

Here's a new thing for you to do for us Can you please do a MenuShrink on the DVD? It will require decrypting onto the hard drive (just the IFOs and VOBs ending with _0.VOB and VIDEO_TS.VOB will be OK). Shrink the menus without audio and zip up the VOBs and IFOs after the MenuShrink and post them here please.

You just wanna watch the movie, right?

I set the menushrink advanced option to "Inf. still times (no audio)" because I thought that was what you meant, processed it, & zipped it, but it was over 7M. But when I tried to restore the backup, it didn't work - the backup folder is empty. So I'll have to re-rip it ul the zip later.

Upload it to rapidshare then. By the look of those times in the DVDs structure, it should be way less than 7mb.

Also tick "remove intor/outro clips" in advanced. And make sure Keep audio is unchecked.

Goodness knows how you lost the backup. MenuShrink keeps a backup folder in the ripped folder.

I'm reasonably certain I had those settings when I ran MS.

My best guess on losing the backup is that I closed MS, then reopened it, which probably replaced the original backup with a backup of the current (shrunk) files. Then when I clicked "restore backup", it emptied the backup directory, which just replaced the shrunk files with the new backup of shrunk files.

Anyway, here's the 7M zip.
