I'm interested in making DIVX movies and i've been looking at different guides (Nicky's, Doom9's, etc.) . With all these guides there are different software recommendations and so on. I'm not even sure if i need to "rip" or "convert" or what. Can someone please point me to the latest and greatest guides? Thanx.

*greatest* is a matter of opinion and lies in the eye of the beholder
ripping or conversion?
well, you'll have to do both:
ripping means extracting your data from dvd to harddrive, conversion will be inevitable afterwards in order to reduce file size.
which tool/routine to go for?
the BEGINNER START HERE posting might be worth a closer look!
i WONT recommend FLASK, though it might be said to be user friendly.
from my p-o-v there are too many *known bugs* accompanying flask.
i personally prefer gordianknot with divx5 codec.
if you're dealing with PAL, you might want to have a look at this guide:
my guide does not, however, cover NTSC!
