    DivFix.

The Playa is supposed to be able to play incomplete AVI files as well, though I haven't yet tested it.

        You're welcome.

A little tip for you. Make a copy of the partial AVI file and use that as the "guinea pig" for DivFix instead. This avoids potential complication when resuming the AVI file.

I started a download of a divx movie, made a copy of the file (called it 1.dat) and divfix opens it but gives me a message "not an avi file" when I try to rebuild the index. What gives?

I've also tried to name it 1.avi ....keeping the original ..am I using this utility wrong...

A .dat file. It seems to be an (S)VCD file. Try playing the file with Windows Media Player and/or a DVD player software, such as PowerDVD or WinDVD.

It could also be an XCD. In which case you need the Riff CD/XA filter, to play the file in wmp.

And assuming that the file was stored in the ogg fileformat, you might also need the Ogg Vorbis DirectShow filters.

I know it's an avi file, cause when it finishes downloading, I am able to view it in media player. It seems like everything downloads as .dat while it is downloading! Any ideas?

now I can open the .dat file ...it tries to rebuild the index then gives me an error offset message ...but then does build a
divfix.1 file... windows media player plays it but the screen is blank... I downloaded 10,000 bytes.

It could be a fake, load the file into virtualdub, and select File->'File Information' and post what it says.

looks legit ...am I missing a codec? Virtual dub shows black screen ... guess not?

Are you kidding. This screams fake.
It says that the video is only 2 fps, Uncompressed RGB. Noone in their right mind would encode a movie that way.

The reason you only see a black screen is that the frames are all black, this is how fakes are made.
