it is a codec like divx

the second part of your question is hard to answer due to lacking specification, what you consider an *ordinary mpeg*

By Mpeg I would assume that you are reffering to either Mpeg-1 or 2, Xvid (like DivX) is an Mpeg-4 compliant codec. As the number indicates Mpeg-4 is a later more advanced generation of video compression.

Ok so its another format for video. In comparison to mpeg, I mean...is it something that I can use to burn a dvd to view on my tv dvd player. For instance taking a video stream of it and author it into dvd...

NO, DVD players do not support Mpeg-4.

A new hardware standalone player from "Kiss technologies" supposedly plays back xvid content, and limited divx 5.0 content (SVCD, VCD and dvd too). Search this forum for more information, and you can visit the product website as well and divx.com
