    DVD to DivX 5.x using Gordian Knot - AC3 vs MP3?

    Lately I've been following the DVD to DivX 5.x using Gordian Knot guide to do all my encoding. And then I came across all of the debate between AC3 audio and MP3. My question is, the Gordian Knot guide uses MP3 ... is this acceptable? And how would I go about using AC3 with Gordian Knot?

    Second, all of my rips have lots of artifacts, they're pretty blocky. Using 2 pass and Divx 5 pro ... I'm getting max file size... I don't know what else to try! What should the "compatibility" be at, and all those other settings? I wish the guide went into more detail... any help?

    Nothing wrong with that. In fact, using MP3 (or even OGG) gives you smaller filesize for a small reduction in quality (as long as you are using a respectable audio codec). AC3 basically is the original sound stream found in a lot of DVDs, but it is considerably large. Hence you should aim for a minimum of 2 CDs if you are planning to use AC3.

    You can rip the AC3 track out using DVD2AVI and mux it using nandub or VirtualDubMod.

    What are your quantisizer settings?

      using ac3 isnt that complicated.

      have dvd2avi extract ac3 like enchanter said before.
      afterwards mux theses audiostream(s) with your avi using CORRECT interleaving settings and you're done!

        How do you determine the correct interveaving settings ?
        If at first you don't succeed, give up.

          by using what has proven to be good; i.e. using the settings that were proposed in TSUNAMIS MUXING table.

          you'll find the values in my guide.

            Oh right, so is MP3 the same principle as at the moment I have been intervealing every one frame - as in are there different settings for MP3 interleaving.

              For muxing MP3, there are various interleave settings that will work just as well. For me, I interleave every 1000 ms or 24 frames, and it works fine for me.

                Oh right ok cool - so is there any advantages / disadvantages of different interleaving settings for MP3, or doesn't it really matter ?

                  As long as it works properly, what more can you ask for?
