Mpeg edit solution?

Hi, I have just bought a usb tv/video capure device.
At the moment I am producing very large raw avi's. which I am converting to mpeg 1 with TMPGEnc. This is cool for space saving but I have had a problem editing the mpegs. I have tried MPEG scissors but this was not doing what I expected.

Does anybody know of a free and if not cheap mpeg editor.
