    XVID codec hassle...

This post might shoulda been on the newbie forum...
    Here goes...
When I try to watch a xvid movie I get "Failed to open file" error.
I'm using the free divx player from divx.com. I d/led the xvid codecs from this site and installed it... Still getting same error.
Win.Media 9 will play the audio but the video is trash...
    Any ideas? Different player maybe??

Try the tusanmi 3.9.9 codec/filter pack. Nimo is out dated and there are many problems with it. You can find this codec at UncasMS's website

        Hi kentodd

Hi kentodd. IMHO, a "failed to open" message indicates that the file is a fake or a corrupted file, so I'd really like to learn if you get some success getting this to play.

Could you post a screenshot of your GSpot Report for comparison purposes? This will help others compare notes with you and offer specific advice.

        Good luck.

        FYI: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/gspot.html

          Details....

If it means anything...Win.Med.9 player opened the file ok
          ...audio good, pic bad.

When I d/l one of these codecs....
Where do I put it, in the player's folder?
Do players automatically find the needed codec?
Or how do I tell the player where to find the codec?
          How does this work?
          Thanx....Ken

The Tusanmi and Nimo pack install them yourself! You have to do nothing!

So SKD_Tech, is the tusanmi 3.9.9 codec pack better than nimo build? I haven't had any problems with nimo but i have heard from others complaining.

Whats the score with it then?

              Steve......

I'm not sure what all the bad things about Nimo are but I had some problems, and most everyone prefers Tusanmi 3.9.9 I would suggest you get rid of Nimo and go with Tusanmi

search this forum for nimo + problem and you'll see

                  - nimo has deactivated divx5 in past releases
                  - it has changed filter priorities
                  - you were not able to decide which filter/codec to install and which not
                  - nimo destroyed associations (playback of mpeg/vob in wmp for example)
                  - flipped video

                  and many more......

you could try a 4CC change to change it from xvid if that doesnt work. the one I have is called "AVIC" this will alow you to change from to divx

                            Educate me...

Do players automatically find the needed codec?
Or how do I tell the player where to find the codec?

                            How does this work?

the player will try to use the necessary codec if installed

thus no need to do anything apart from installing codecs/filters
