    3ivX

by what little i've been able to read on 3ivX, it's a codec that seems perfect. supports everything, no messes with 10 different divx/xvid codecs, ultimate MPEG-4 support..

i've only this codec installed instead of xvid/divx codecs and everything is working fine. (it wasn't working fine before i removed it all and replaced with 3ivX)
tsunami pack offered heaps of codecs, i chose only this one and all my problems were fixed.

so my question is: what are it's drawbacks? what am i missing? why isn't everyone using it? when will i be proven wrong for using just this one codec?

    "why isn't everyone using it?"

    Probably because:

    1) It was developed on the "Mac side of the world" = and, therefore, doesn't get enough publicity

    2) Is primarily touted for its (excellent quality) cross-platform compression ability, with virtually no reference to its playback abilities

i still don't get it, what's wrong with it's playback capabilities? on my very slow computer i get nice quality video without glitches after installing only one codec instead of 5-6 of them. i cannot notice any difference between a movie decoded with 3ivx or divx/xvid.

so what are the real drawbacks?

Many people still feel that dix/xvid affords higher quality. Also, xvid/divx has a greater user base, resulting in more detailed "encoding guides" and procedures and support.

The 3ivx codec may encounter problems with XVID playback (colour issues).

Yes, it appeared to me that you were wondering how 3ivx decodes xvid with B-frames, I thought it might be useful to give you a visual example.

                    just to make sure..

so as long as i'm not having any problems with playback, i can use 3ivx without being paranoid?

                    i don't encode.

                        Absolutely!

                        Eventually, the rest of the digital video world may discover what an excellent codec 3IVX really is ;>}

                            no tests?

3ivx is only way for me to decode and view movies with fourcc 'div3' code. i don't know why this happens, but divx filter in tsunami pack 3.9.9. full and ffdshow give me a very opaque constant grey cover over the picture, so there is hardly anything visible.

however, i have some other 3ivx problems, so currently i sometimes have to switch (un/re/install) codecs depending on the movie i want to see.
