    NEED DIRECTION... First Timer

O.K. guys, who wants to help a total newbie?

I'm pretty good at editing in Premiere.... that's where my skills end. I can capture and edit PERIOD...

So, I have this 12minute 2.4Gigabyte file that has taken my about 4 months to complete. (anyone who uses MicroMV and DV together might be able to tell you why... just took awhile to learn all the editing tricks)

    BUT IT'S DONE!!!

So... what in the hell do I do with it?? No DVD burner.... can put it on a tape and that's just dandy.... BUT..

What are the better "digital" solutions for a media type... VCD??

Any software I should be looking at (without breaking the bank)

Ideally I'd like to make some VCD's for my friends to view. I would guess my first step is some kind of conversion to get the file size WAY down.... then what???

    HELP...

o.k... sorry did a bit more searching... found the newbies start here section..

    Think I'll be O.K.

    1. Convert to Divx encoded AVI

    2. Use Nero to convert Divx/AVI to VCD..

    Sounds easy enough... we'll see

DO NOT USE NERO TO CONVERT AVI TO MPEG-1 or 2

Use TMPGEnc many people have had upside down videos doing that. Also if possible you will get better quality by making a SVCD also done with an AVI through TMPGEnc

            cool..

thanks a bunch bro... it's appreciated. I'll let you know how it goes..

One more question for you... don't know if you use premiere, but whould it be better or even possible to convert in premiere or should I stick with VirtualDub or whatever it is....?? to go from my AVI to a Divx AVI... or does the TEMPGE not need it to be a Divx file???

I'm not home right now so I can't play around...

As long as it is AVI I am pretty sure TMPGEnc will pick it up.

As for premiere I think VirtualDub is SO MUCH EASIER! If you need to know how to compress using VDub just tell me it isn't any longer than like 4 steps

                Issues.... humm???

                O.K.

                1. TMPG gives "can not open or unsupported"

                2. Virtual Dub gives

Could Not Locate Decompressor for format "dvsd" (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows Format (VFW) compatable codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs such as those used by Windows Media Player are not suitable..

                So... what do you think?

Sounds like you need to get a codec pack like Tsuanmi 3.9.9 which can be found at my sites below

                    O.K. sounds good..

Heres what I did on my own before I downloaded the codecs.

I simply used Premiere to re-export the movie... got it down to about 220MB using the "Windows AVI" instead of just "AVI" export type. And then used the Divx 5.something compressor (lots of settings to learn there)

Then finally was able to run the file through TMPGE to convert to MPEG...

                    geesh...

NOW... here's my problem, I thought it would pick the correct dimensions... WRONG... it's 480x480??? What the hell???

Not sure where that happend along the way.. the original is 720x480

I'm going to try again with the original now that I have the codec "pack"

Thanks again for helping me out on this. Lots to learn

480x480 is the proper resolution for a (NTSC) compliant SuperVideoCD (SVCD)...

O.K. then... that explains that one.. I read on this site that some odd number like 352x240 (I take it that's only VCD not SVCD)

Tried using the default premiere export tool... MediaCleaner... didn't seem to work that well either...

Gonna keep messing around with this TMPG untill I figure it out...

At your stage on the learning curve, I'd suggest that if you want to create a VCD using TMPGEnc, you simply use the "wizard"/template for VCD ("NTSC" format, which is 352x240). That way you won't have to get into any detailed settings...

Alright... I now have a supposedly "proper" mpg file. It's much smaller to boot down from
                            1. original AVI (dv capture and render) 2.4Gig
                            2. recompress as "Windows AVI" using Divx Codec 5.03 something
                            3. convert to mpg using TMPGEnc wizard for VCD now at 122MB and 352x240

                            4. open up Nero5.5 VCD wizard... checked all settings... good to go.. burn disc... cool

Freakin thing doesn't play an any of my machines... two top of the line DVD palyers (Toshiba sd5109 and a Denon DVD3800)

So I try my ol' Playstation2... nothing.. what about the computer itslef... nothing

"My place in the learning curve" ... about rock bottom bro... I'm struggling here...

What do you guys think... ??? Burning incorrectly now.. or is the file still not right... everything I've read says my file should be fine.
