the best way to compress a movie file...

what is the best way to compress a movie file, specifically an avi file? i always use virtual dub after my encoding, but lately i have had some problems...
when i try to resize a film (720.340 to 512.296, 790 mb), i have used divx 5.05, divx, 5.03 and xvid... and every file that has result is bigger than the original one...
i also tried with gordian knot... but there was no audio because i couldnt select any audio source...
a little help in here...
thanx for your atte.

Surpisingly enough, file size has nothing to do with frame dimensions, it's just a relation between bitrate, file size and length (time) of avi. Inbetween lies the quality.

If it is larger you will need to decrease your bitrate. More than likely it was set higher than the original copy

GK is a collection of programms aimed at ripping dvd's to avi format. If you just want to recompressan avi just use VirtualDub

ive always used virtual dub, but recently i have had a problem, when i try to recompress an avi file created by gordian knot in virtual dub, it tells me that there is a problem with ther audio: "virtual dub has detected an improper vbr audio encoding (audio stream 1)..." and it asks me if i want to rewrite the header. This makes the audio to play in a different time to the video... why is this? do i have to do something else? thanx for your help...

Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use NanDub (or VirtualDubMod) to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into NanDub
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" - and choose "<No compression(PCM)>"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).

Then close NanDub and restart it
Set "Audio" to "No audio"
Load your silent .AVI
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Under "Audio" click on "WAV Audio" and load your .WAV
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the appropriate .MP3 settings. Click on "OK"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and save your file with a new filename.

Hi!

If u really wanna have perfect results u should EVER use the dual pass (1st&2nd pass) of DivX5.05
VirtualDub is perfect for this kind of work, but if u also wanna erase imperfections of the source try to use TMPGEnc, the noise filter is better than 2dCleaner and SmartSmoother of VDub.

the bitrate depends only on the length of the film:

Bitrate(Kibit/s)= (#MB*1024*8)/(#seconds)

the resolution depends on the bitrate; to use high bitrates with low resolution and vice-versa is useless, so the perfect ratio between those is this:

(kBit/s * 1024)/(hight * width * fps)= K
K=0.15 for low-medium quality
K=0.20 for medium-high q
K>0.30 .....too much!

u can use GordianKnot to simplify calculations

Using these parameters everythig is possible....4example Pulp Fiction (147 MINUTES) on ONE CD!

Thanx for your atte.

I know, i know, but if u use Nandub as Setarip said u should have no problem....well, honestly there could be a "little" problem: desynchronization
this is the reason why i never use VBR, but, anyway, there are some ways to fix any kind of desync, so don't worry!

I think u should care a little more about video: everytime u recompress an AVI u have a (relative) little loss of quality and u don't use those parameters the output file could have imperfections like dots or "macroblocks", expecially in "high-motion" scenes.

Good luck!

Nandub accepts VBR with no sync problems so don't worry

True, but i was referring to the desync that is created in the moment u play the movie, expecially using slow CPUs and after seeking the video.
Most of the avi with VBR that i saw had this broblem, maybe it's just a coincidence, maybe ALL of them were not interleaved...

the avi container is known for certain troubles with VBR mp3 - the async problem has been reported more than once.
