    clueless about capture

i just need a little help on capture....
i've captured an hour long video in AVI format
but its 700 megs or so... its in a really crappy
resolution as well... is there any way to make
it better quality, and/or make the file size smaller?

i've seen people with 30-60 minute videos on CDs
that could fit 5-6 videos on the CD....

just curious, and feedback is appreciated.

    what was your resolution?
    what was your codec?
what settings did you use with the codec?

    we need your specs!

      specs...

res. 160x120 - yeah i know thats low, but the others take up a huge amount of space.

      codec... MPEG-4 Video Codec V2
didn't change any codec settings... don't know where those
      would be.

i use MGI VideoWave 4 for capture if that helps any.

don't know any other information i can give...

i'd suggest you go this way:

        use virtualdub for capturing

mjpeg picvideo 2 as codec set to max settings (this will result in a huge file!)

capture audio as pcm wave to prevent frame drops unless you have a real fast system

        use a resulotion of some 640 x 480

when this huge avi file has been created, load it into virtualdub again and save it to mpeg4 (divx 3.11 or better m$ v2).

this way you will be able to create avi files with some 60 minutes playing time that should look very good!

the resolution quality isnt really an issue...
i just want to be able to compact the files
as much as possible... can't really put any
other movies if you have a 700 meg file.

that was the main concern... the way i have
          it captured itself is fine...

                hmm...

he never said anything about size...
he said the quality would be great...
and i can get great quality anyways.
but if it gives good size as well, then
                i will do it.

                  final step :

                  Virtual Dub :
_load your file (one hour long)
                  _video : full processing mode
                  _ compression...
                  divx 3.x or 4.x
                  configure :
                  set bitrate = 30
                  _save avi as...

                  well done !
                  your file doesn't exceed 700Mo !!!
                  (incredible, fantastique !)
