ogm vs. SVCD

I have been using DVX to backup dvds in ogm format. I have gotten great quality by putting each movie on 2 discs, but I have to go through the hassle of plugging the laptop into the tv to watch. I was wondering if 2 disc SVCD's would have as good of a quality. If so, I would appreciate it if someone could point me to a good program and/or guide for making svcd's.
also, if I were to capture video input with virtual dub in avi format, could I process them in the same manner? Thanks a lot.

used with cce or tmpeg the quality is very good
