How to determine the exact MPG file type?

    Hello:

Please, I am looking for a video file detector utility, that can determine the exact MPG video file type of a movie.
I am asking this, because I have a MPG video file that Windows Media Player 9 can´t read giving the error Error# C00D11CD.
GSpot only determine a generic mpg file. I use KLCODEC2.EXE for codecs updating, and also tried RadLight viewer with the same results.

    I would appreciate any help.

    My best regards.

So now, at this point, you've been unable to play the video and unable to get VirtualDubMOD to accept it for input.

        1) How do you know that the file is truly an MPEG file?

        2) Try playing the video with a software DVD player, such as WinDVD

Well, WinDVD works fine. I can see the movie.

After all, I am in doubt. This movie cames with a .srt subtitle file. It seems WinDVD doesn´t work with this class of subtitle file. so I guess it should work with RadLight for example (if not, what is the purpouse of a .srt file) . What could be wrong ?. Why others viewers doesn´t read it ?

          Thanks in advance. Rob

"Well, WinDVD works fine. I can see the movie."

When you're playing the video in WinDVD, look at the WinDVD player. Does it say "MPEG", or does it say "File"?

"Why others viewers doesn´t read it ?"

It's most probably an MPEG-2 (or MPEG-2SuperVideoCD) file. While WinDVD includes the required playback filters included as part of its installation, many general players do not include these.

I do not understand, however, why VirtualDub MOD generated the "MPEG Import Filter: couldn´t determine MPEG type" error message...

You are right.! I installed VirtualDubMode 1.5.4.1 and it read the file. It´s a MPGE-2 type. Can Virtual convert the movie to another format ?, ( I suppose a lost of quality).

                    My best regards.

VirtualDubMOD (if you have the proper codecs installed), is capable of compressing the file into several different formats (NOT including any MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 formats).

I'd suggest your read the information files that were included with you download of VirtualDubMOD...

If you want to be able to view MPEG-2 files with other players besides WinDVD, download and run DVDGenie. Click on the "WinDVD" tab. Click on the "More" radiobutton".Click on "Register filters to Windows"...
