newbie question: what program to edit mpeg's, avi's, etc.

I just need to take a few mb's off a few movies that I've DL'd so they will fit on a single CD. Note, I'm not making VCD's or anything that will directly play in a DVD player. I just want to edit the credits out to make it smaller.

Any suggestions?

Also, if this isn't in the right forum, please let me know and I'll move it. Didn't know where to put it.

If it is mpeg files you wish to edit, use "TMPGENc" (a different program than TMPGENc DVD Author) Use the "Merge and Cut" feature under "File" > "Mpeg tools". With AVIs, you can use Virtual Dub (or any of it's variants) to do a similar function.

evidently I'm not as good with computers as I thought I was.

Something I never understood were codecs and this is now going to be a problem. The files in question are DiVX Codec and I need to modify them. I've DL'd both of the programs above and neither of them will modify DiVX codec movies, unless I just can't figure it out.

Thoughts?

Try VirtualDubMod. Its pretty self-explanatory, but if you need help just look here:

When I tried to open the video with VirtualDub, I get the following error:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format "XVID" (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

DL'd and installed FFDirectshow and I still can't open most of these. Infact, I don't think anything changed.

Also, the files are listed as "Video File" not as "mpeg" as some of my other files are.

Awesome!! the above XviD codec that I installed made it so I can open the videos! Now, the only problem I have is the video and audio don't line up... they are at least 5 seconds off on this most recent test. So, how do I properly line these up?

Try use Reclock - comes with tusnami filter pack. If that doesn't work try ffdshow (also woth tusnami). However, you have to have a decent pc as a slow one would cause this.

I'm running a P4-1.6 Ghz, 256 ram , 40 gig. Should be good enough for this I'd assume.

I'll try this new suggestion and see what happens.

Might be the lack of ram if you are running other tasks (cpu intensice) such as writing a cd etc..
