    Strange problem

I am having a very strange problem playing video files. I can play Mpeg1/2, Mpeg4 version 1/2, and standard Avi/Divx files. However, in all other formats, including Mpeg4 V3, WMV and ASF, the audio functions normally but the video is replaced with solid gray. I have reinstalled all codecs, media player, my video drivers, directX, but nothing works. It is not only affecting media player specifically, but any video player I use.

However, when I open the "properties" of a specific clip so affected, and go to the preview tab, I recieve both audio and video normally. This problem seemed to start after I installed the PowerDivxNextGen and MicroDVD players...I noticed it first when I played a movie in PowerDivx. I uninstalled both programs immediately, but the problem has persisted. I have no evidence that either program is the cause, only that I discovered the problem immediately after installing them.

No one I have spoken to has ever encountered this problem before. I'll be forced to format my hard drive to remedy this, unless anyone can tell me how to fix it.

    Any ideas??

I had the same problem when I installed the GDIVX player. I looked in the players settings and it had an option to assign different file formats to the player where when you double click on the file it automatically opens them. I removed the options for the files but I still had problems with playing. Heres how I fixed it. I removed all my codecs from my mulimedia settings and restarted. Then I removed all my players from my system and restarted. Then go to the folder options of any folder and go to file types and remove any file types that have problems for example .avi files. Then I reinstalled windows making sure that the original windows media player was installed. Then I installed my codecs and restarted. Then I reinstalled my windows media player update. Then my other players but before I played any avis I made sure that they didn't make the avi play from them by default in their settings. After all that I got it to work without having to format C:. hope that helps. one more thing when you install the mpeg 4 codecs I think it askes if you want to use the codec to playback all divx files. I tried yes once and it also messed things up try no after reinstalling and see.
