"unrecognized format" appears when I try and play movie...

I have a gateway laptop. It has a recordable dvd player. It has recorded several dvd's through time.
Now when I try and play a movie I get "unrecognized format."

Does this mean my dvd player is worn out, or could there be a software glich? or is there some simple test I can make to determine where the problem is?

Is it just this one DVD or does this happen with all dvd's?

If it is not accepting anything at all I would think that the dvd player/ burner may be going.
