    Hi techreactor,

I recently purchased the BenQ DW 1655; have been burning verbatims SL w/ it for a few weeks, & it is giving me good results w/ those. 95 - 97 QS.

It came w/ a lightscribe disc which I haven't had a chance to burn yet - maybe today

A few of my best burns are posted

Post should follow this format: Brand and type of media , MID code, country of origin, burn speed on what burner sony 8x dvd +r, Yuden T02, made in japan(mij), @ 8x with Nec 3550A Please attach cdspeed or dvdinfo or kprobe quality scans as png Please refer to this thread first http://forum.digital-digest

I haven't had any problems with my DL Lightscribe burner. It has worked well and the quality of the images is good. The media is still a little pricey so I don't use it for all my disc, just "special" ones. Mine came with Sonic Express Labeler software for the imaging and it seems to be pretty good software. The images can take a while to burn on disc, up to 30 minutes if there is alot of detail, 10-15 minutes if you are just burning title, song/chapter list.

I have to wonder what this does to the life of the laser.

          ditto; separate laser perhaps?

I think it uses a seperate laser, you put the disc in upside down to burn the image.

I haven't had any trouble with my Lightscribe Dual layer DVD +/- RW drive.Works great and very efficient. The discs that I have used the lightscibe on have come out great. The only drawback is it does take a while to use the labelling feature.I would definitely recommend it .

I am really not sure what it does for the life of the drive and/or laser itself.I do not use it alot, just certain occasions.

                  smoky,
you are burning the top side so it has to be unside down, of course I have seen patterns burned to the data side also(small initial dvd burn) graphics around the edge

I stand corrected it does use the same laser:

"The two sides of the disc are not influenced equally by the laser, however. LightScribe coating doesn't react in the same way as do the high-speed 16X-capable dyes on recordable DVDs, for example. "The material in the data dye is intrinsically different from the coating material on the label side.

Another difference is the laser's focus: Whereas the densely packed data side of the disc is burned with a precisely focused laser, LightScribe drives defocus the laser, which in turn slows down drive speed."

I'm going to be buying two of these lightscribe drives http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106019 if anyone has one tell me what you think. I will always use Lite-On drives as I bought one like 2 years ago and has nevered failed me now.

Mine is in a HP pavioion desktop, came with it. It' a TSSTCorp TS-H552L V0614. . Haven't had any problems with it. My external is a lightscribe had it about 2 1/2 yrs, had to replace it once, under extended warranty. I will say that the Lite_On read some of my older, scratched, dvds when my other would not. I did use it alot before it died but all's been good with the replacement.

Mine is an HP dvd640i I just converted it to a BenQ 1625 recently I have had this drive for over a year and let me say I have worked the hell out of it with no problems what so ever.IMO it is a slow reader compared to the NEC 3550 but I have had some good burns with it,it has never given me a coaster (Scouts Honor) besides my screw ups.If you use light scribe that does take some time but it does do a good job. So yes I would recommend it

I see someone else has a 552L, I also have this drive and have had fine results out of it. I have never tried the Lightscribe part yet, have plenty of disc, just have never taken the time to try it.

I did have a problem with it, kinda forgot about it earlier. It quit reading discs a month or so ago. I'd only had it 4 or 5 months and hadn't used it a whole lot. Tried all the fixes and tests I knew, (stuff I've learned from all the helpful folks on this forum) then called HP they told me to do the same things over again. They thought the laser was bad so I sent it back, go a new one and so far so good.

If you have the media you ought to give it a try. They make a unique looking disc and when the discs get cheaper I'll back them all up that way. Makes a little nicer looking disc then the "ole sharpie" but the sharpie works too! Really nice for cds when you can put the song titles on there.
