Lightscribe Drives

I remember when you had the problem, but I did not know it was that drive, I don't remember you ever saying anything at the time other than it was Lightscribe.

I think I am going to use a few of the Lightscribe disc and give them a try. I wouldn't mind wearing out my burner and getting a new one, like you did.LOL

I have the same programs that you have, so you use the sonic labeler to burn the image? What type of images do you burn? I thought about trying to burn the same image as is on the original, have you or do you do this?

Yes, I use the sonic labeler. I've used some of their templates and backgrounds, mostly for my cds. The images I have burnt I get from a snapshot from Power DVD of the actually content of the dvd. It works well. You have to get a good shot in consideration of the hole in the dvd tho. Some I have put through one of my photo editing programs and "fixed" it to work.

I'm not sure how to burn the original image on the dvd. I have wondered this myself but have never asked anyone. I supposed if you have a good scanner you could scan the cover and get the image there but my scanner is not that great so I haven't tried that.

I would not do that not all burner are the same even the same type, keep the one that you know is good insteed of wear them out, my Nec 3550 is never as good as the one Chewy has

I'm not going to frivolously wear out my burner, just use it as I do now. I was just joking. I'm getting ready to buy a couple of new burners and if something happens to my Lightscribe I will replace it with one of them. If it happens to be under warranty, I will put the new one away for later use. I really don't expect it to go out while under warranty though.

I have been wanting to burn an image to a Lightscribe disc, just never think about it when I am doing a back up. Plus I want to try it out and see the procedure and results for myself.

my 55 is way alot better then my 50 I think I skip the lightscribe and keep burning only

I was just searching around and found this.
It's a website for lightscribe and has lot's of other templates for backgrounds and content that you can download for free. Didn't even know it existed till just now. There are alot more then comes with the sonic labeler. Learn something new everyday!

Lightscribe is pretty cool but it does take awhile to burn the label. The drive also gets pretty hot, not sure if it affects the life of the DVD-RW itself other than it just being another burn. Maybe the heat of the lightscribe dye burning might decrease the life of the drive?

You can also get some DVD covers in lightsvribe templates at CDCovers.cc, maybe more as the technology becomes more mainstream.
I lightscribed a photo of my kids onto a photo CD and it looks 'special'.

I've been searching for info on the life of the drive but haven't found anything yet. It does take a while but some of the images are impressive.

I'll check it out. I'm sure the cd you made was "special". I did it for some wedding pics of some friends and put their picture on there. It works really nice for a present to someone. There are alot of templates for background and content on the sonic labeler software that are nice for presesnts like that, with appropriate themes. I found alot more on that Lightscribe website too.

Thanks for the links, I'll look into them. All this talk has got me anxious to lightscribe some discs! I found one on the site that Mikey talked about for Pirates that's much better then I used. Might have to back it up again and use that one. You can always use an extra backup!!lol You're gonna have to try one out now!

OK smky, I found one last thing. I don't know if you already have it or not, so I will post it. It is ELCU, extended label contrast utility. It allows you to select the quality of the image that is going to be burned, as in draft(original quality), normal(better quality, still quick), and best(highest quality, more time).

Interesting reading - thanks guys, I have the BenQ DW1655 and 5x CD's that came with it for Lightscribe. To be honest I don't think I ever paid it that much attention, initially I tried to get the label image to work but think I hadn't installed the software ! I know nothing happened anyway.....

When I have more time I will have to re-visit just so I can check out what it does ! Personally I prefer the discs I print with my Epson Printer - you just can't beat fully colour prints

Good find, I bookmarked the Lightscribe site to go back and give it a good read. That looks really interesting. I'll have to burn one after I download the ELCU and see how if it really improves the quality.

Color prints on the discs would be great too. The printer prints on the DVDs? What model of printer is it and how much do they run. I like the lightscribe but I would be interested in a new printer. Mines cheap and old!

I can't really remember the model #, but I know my local Sam's club carries a nice Epson that prints to CD/DVD media for around $70. Not a good option for me at this time though, because I do a lot of photo printing and already have 3 Canon printers.

Sam's Club sells the Epson R220 printers for about $90 bucks. And it does a great job printing onto the ink-jet printable discs (comes with the software for it). They actually sell Verbatims that are ink-jet printable at Sam's Club also, $40 bucks for a spindle of 100. Not to bad.
