Using Labels on Home Created DVD's

I had been creating labels for my DVD Home Movies but recently I read people saying not to put labels on......so I come here to the experts...

    1) Is it OK to put labels on dvd's
    2) If no labels, can I take a sharpie pen & write on the dvd (there is no designated spot to write) ?
    3) If no to #1 and #2 - then how can I be sure not to mix up a dvd in the wrong case?

    Thanks so much!

#1 (NO). #2 (as long as you don't write on the information side, YES). #3 (If you play a dvd & put it back in the case when done, that would equal one dvd to one empty case, the math works everytime).

      Thanks for the reply
LOL, yes I know one dvd per case but if I have labels on my cases but not on my dvd's they could get put in the wrong case...ya know?

Well, I guess I will stop making pretty labels for my dvd's and just write on the top of the dvd (where I once put a label) with a sharpie marker instead.

Why are writing on them ok but not labels that are made for them? Why do they sell the label kits if they are nto good to use?

      Thanks so much!

labels can unglue from the disc, and also can cause out of balance problems. best to forget labels.

I bought a kit myself, thought I would get all fancy (LOL). Read one thread here on the subject, now use Sharpie all the time. Live & learn but have fun while you are doing it.

                    Hi Ohiocaps,

If you are interested in fancy cds/dvds, you could go with the inkjet printable media. There are several threads on here discussing it -
Hi all, I recently purchased the Epson R220 Stylus Photo printer, & am anxious to try some disc printing! Question: Can I print on "standard" DVDRs & CDRs? I have many TY Shiny top & Verbs, & I would like to print labels on them. Thought I would ask before I attempted it! Thanks, katz

                    regards, katz

If you properly CENTER the stick on label over the DVD/CD disk then you will not have any problems with balance, as long as the stick on label goes over a clean dry surface.

I have CD/DVD disks that are over 5 years old with no problems with stick on labels. The next upgrade is a printer like the Epson R220 that sprays ink over the CD/DVD disk.

I did the exact same thing until I started reading this forum and doing tests on my burns. I did have fun ripping and burning those coasters and seeing how much better they can be without a sticky label on them, lol.

I agree with you there as I have kept some of mine just to test now and then, but I'm more worried about the adhesive damaging one of my dvd burners or players.

I use to use labels on my backups to. But after a few years the glue on the label or the paper itself starts to swell and when ithe label gets thicker and you try to watch the movie I'll get pixelation in the movie or a complete stoppage of the movie in most of my dvd players. So anymore I just use a sharpie as you cannot see the pretty label unless you have a dvd player made of glass.

I stopped using the labels as well. I found that I was having freeze ups. Even though it was centered with the proper labeling equipment, the problems persisted. I have almost no problems at all now that I stopped using the labels.

I also read somewhere that over time a sharpie can seep into the disc and cause problems, so I bought those pens that are made specifically for CD/DVD labeling.
