Before I bought a new DVD burner, I was getting problems with DVDs playing in one of my DVD players that's my Pioneer. I was using Minus discs and when I tried Plus discs, they played. I got the odd fault with some DVDs and it got worse but the DVD burner caused that jazz. I needed to update my Firmware and I got so many problems with that that dragged on like a boring board meeting, I deciding to cut out the middleman and buy a new DVD burner.

Something odd for me with my DVD+RWs that are TDK, well, it might happen with DVD-RW also with any brand, I haven't fully checked yet. When I use a DVD+RW TDK in my Sony DVD recorder, I can finalize after the first recording but when I either delete the titles or format the disc and record on it again, the Finalize option is greyed out so that I can't finalize. Somehow those discs can still play in other machines. I forgot to check if they will still play in my PC. As we all know, and as a rule, unfinalized discs shouldn't play in other machines because that's the whole point in finalizing them to make them play in all other machines.

WOW.. I have NEVER seen a person so divided on what to use for himself and what to give to others ... hehehe
I do NOT know if THIS will help at all... BUTTTTTTTTTTT
My best burning has been with Sony +Rs. (I have a sony dru 700 a)
I bought Verbatim +R and I think its my latest firmware update that's NOT doing what I think it should. The last TDK +R I got were made by a crap company, CMC I called and they told me they would replace them.. WITH THE SAME PRODUCT!!! I was getting 95% quality burns with sony +R, bought the TDK (Those Damn Koasters) and it was a downwards spiral. The TDK -R was indeed made by TDK but the +R were not (CMC). Right away I thought my computer went haywire... blutech pointed out they were CMC I got the Sony's +R again.. they again quality burns.
Quality is indeed means alot. Even the best of us gets fooled from TIME TO TIME. Just watch yourself, read the guides, see what is happening to others and you'll find the right media for your burner and you'll get quality burns.
rule of thumb... Crap + Crap = Crap.
          Simple
          Peace

You may laugh Charlie, But I live in the Mts. of NC, maybe 13 miles to the SC border and maybe 5-6 miles to Georgia. The Super wal-mart nearest my home in Clayon, GA told me they stopped selling Verbatim DVDs because they didn't sell !!! The sell Memorex (crap CMC) and Maxell (Crap.. some of CMC) and then the lesser house brands (umm like Super Silver or some crappy name).
Which goes to show.. people don't care about quality.. just price.
What the hell is the world coming to? Where is Squeeky Frum??
IT WAS INDEED THAT WHITE ALBUM THAT MADE ME BUY CMC PRODUCTS!

I've noticed with burned -R older dvd players quirky with them. So why bother figuring out if the player will play -R just use +R. Yay!!!

                      1st choice

DVD+R for bitsetting to DVD-ROM (older -only players love them)
                      16X
white label so my printer can spray paint them

You crack me up!! YES we go to Asheville sometimes, but haven't been there in 6 months. It's almost 2 1/2 hours from here, same distance (time wise) as it is to Atlanta from me. Look Up Scaly Mountain, NC on the map (we are a part of highlands) and you'll see. Hwy 64 is a slow winding road once you travel 70-80 miles its a two and change trip.. even longer when you get behind Flordia people. I use to live in Asheville, a few block from the Civic center, I use to sit on my porch and listen to the concerts at night. (Sometimes sit outside the lower garage door enterance and have a beer and listen) Once upon a time I also worked at the Biltmore House at the Deer Park cooking and preping as a kid. Best Buy wasn't there then.. But I went there last Nov before the baby was born so my wife could to that Baby's R US place... But yeah I saw Best Buy on the Right, past the mall down the hill and I had to stop..but I wasn't into burning then, only thinking about it.
It is about 12:45 am at the time of this writing... I WISH I could go but I am working one of my 2 jobs today. Even if I went 74.. it's still a 45 min ride thru the gorgue, or down thru dillard,ga its about 25+ miles gut to get on 74 never mind the other 80 miles.
HEHE so you see I am honestly "in the middle of NO WHERE".
But anytime you find the +R in TY or Verbatims or Sony Please feel free to link it to me.
Also I have a new burning issue.. I'll try to screen shot you when I get home.. but the Verbatims I starting using are giving me lesser score burns than the Sony's, can't figure out why.
Think it has something to so with the firmware update?
(damn if only I had/ can find one more sony for testing)

Are they still good burns? I haven't had a Verbatim yet that will come close to the Sony TY's. BTW you are right, I just googled Scaly Mountain NC & you are in the middle of nowhere. What's the population?

I have to go with the +R . There are however considerations that one would want to consider. I have read somewhere and I don't remember where right now but I understand that -R will hold about 8MB more of information movie etc. that can be recorded to the disc. But that same -R disc will also record a fingerprint , footprint or whatever you want to call it that will identify the the make, model and serial number of the burner that you are using to burn with. +R will not . Bitsetting is a plus but I currently have not used it as everything I have burned with both burners that I currently have and the one that was replaced played in everything that I have personally tried to play it in. I have only burned about 50 -R discs and those came with NEC 3550a burners that I bought from Newegg.
Everything else has been +R for 2 1/2 years plus now.
My first stand alone dvd burner for recording off of T.V. or satellite was DVD +R only. So thats what I started out with. My first standalone burned up last summer and my new one will record +R or -R. But I have stayed with the +R.

What caused the login in information and password bars to go to a peach color. When did it happen. YUK! I liked the old greyish color in glassy blue.

Never had a DVD-R that wouldn't play in any player since I started burning (2004). Sony(Taiwan), Maxell (Japan), Vebatim (Taiwan), Fuji (Taiwan) All burn't with ImgBurn or DVDD. Of these brands some of the Fuji burns with the NERO program didn't get a high score around 70% (problems at the edge) but they all play perfectly well no pixilation after 3 years.

I use some Verbatim DL's so I bitset to ROM on some backups. Yes +R makes it more compatible by bitsetting but I have never had a -R that wouldn't play on any player. Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba, Samsung.
