what exactly are the reprocutions from creating divx and wm8 from dvd? Could you actually do any jail time for this? Or is it such a big explosion that it is only cost efficiant to go after big time players like peer to peer file trading networks e.g. Napster, Information forums e.g. Digital Digest, or even program projects e.g. Divx, Flask, etc. Has anybody ever heard of any arrests for this? I'm not sure all the legalities of the issue. Does anybody have some info with examples of people or companies exposed to these legalized enjustices.

I have never heard of any such things (Not that I ever paid attention to it!), although I've heard plenty of threats and heavy punishments for even possessing rips.
My thought is there are many people who are capable of ripping DVDs and it's not worth the effort (and cost) to try to "catch" them one by one. Hence, the easier method would be to stop distribution of it through the big players, like Kazaa and others. Well, I don't personally use Kazaa and so, hopefully someone more knowledgeable in this "area" can enlighten us further. -
bummer
thanks Enchanter for the quick responce.
I understand that there is a lot of legalities involved with this, but
I have never seen hard proof that it is jailable. Nothing but rumors and the persecution of the one for publishing decss.
1. does anyone know who created decss?
2. does anyone know of anyone doing time for this?
3. would it be a mistaminor or felany?
4. is there geographical differences in the law?
5. url, documentation, proof, any supporting documents?
6. what holds more water fair use vs. digital millinium act?
i'm thinking any of these questions could shed a little light on the matter.

I honestly think you're excessively worried on this subject. As you know, MP3 files are strictly not legal either and what difference does it make if you own ripping software? Apart from DVD ripper software, all else are pretty much 'okay.' Encoders are used for various other purposes aside from DVD ripping, such as video capture editing. Also, remember, you have the right to make back-up copies of DVDs you own and hence, that necessitates the existence of these softwares.
As I stated earlier, owning these softwares only make you one bug amongst millions of others and it just is not worth the effort (and cost) to get you all one by one. Also, even if they do random raids (which just is not a good idea either), it's not going to have much effect on the big picture.
If you're really worried though, delete all the 'troublesome' files and softwares and buy DVDs as your sole source of entertainment. It's not something I would ever dream of doing though.Comment

Having the DivX codec installed in your system will enable ANY players in your system to use that codec. You do not need to install the codec one by one for each player. By the way, I am still able to play music CDs in WMP6.4, Winamp, Musicmatch and any other players you care to name. Oh yes! I have the DivX codec installed too, along with many other ripping softwares! The Windows 2000 system that I'm using is also based on the NT kernel.
Does that satisfy your questions?
p.s. You're letting yourself controlled, you know.Comment

codecs
my work has a program that searches for unregistered programs, exacutables, etc. and after it finds one it shuts down all cd access. I need a way to stick the divx codec into the wmp6 for nt to playback without any reminences to shut me down. I can watch wm8 only the auto update in the player can not find any codecs in windows library to load. i'm afraid that the remainder of divx's install may destroy my capability of watching wm8eternal peace
