no sound at all on startup or otherwise

tried everything, volume controls, device manager, drivers, speakers are working, just can't figure this out, any guesses out there? windows xp

So this is a computer problem you're referring to, or you're not getting sound when you open your dvd software to play a burned dvd, or what?

yup my computer. On startup and any other time, no sound, dunno whats left to check out. If it is sound card how do I know?

Uninstall the drivers and removing the sound card (from the device manager).

Turn PC off, reseat the sound card in the PCI slot then turn PC back on, reinstall the drivers.

That failing, turn PC off and try a different PCI slot and reboot.

probably stupid question but to reinstall the drivers do I need software and I am assuming that sound card should be attached to where I plug in speakers? device manager says everything is working fine, do I still need to do the above?

The device manager only indicates that the driver for your sound card is functional. It doesn't; however, show the hardware problem. Just make sure that you didn't mute audio by accident and also try to unplug and plug the speaker cable. Sometimes the problem can be cured by remove the sound card and clean the electrical contact with a new dollar bill

Thats a new one on me benbryant, what does the dollar bill do; clean it better or something?

With most new Mobo's the sound chips are integrated so dont look for an slotted sound card, if the chips have gone bad, you'll need a Mobo replacement/repair (depending on warranty)

The texture of the new dollar bill is perfectly good enough to clean the electrical contacts without damaging them. That is why quite a few PC repair experts recommend to use it for cleaning
