    DVD Burns "Incompatible"

I just bought a new Vista PC and had to upgrade to Nero8 Pro. The 3 DVD burns I've made which involve Nero through a shell program have tested great in the PIE/PIF tests but will not play on my Panasonic DVD player. I get a "disk incompatible" error.

I'm using Sony DVD+R disks and while the DVD-ROM option was ghosted in the shell program the disk tested as a DVD-ROM. I tried it with both the DVD+R/DVD-RW hi compatibility mode on and off. I'd post the Nero Log but I've searched the Program Files, Program Data and Local Application Data folders. Where is it???

BTW the PC came with Roxio which I have not uninstalled. Would that interfer?

    Thanks!

The source video was NTSC. Why do you ask? Did I mess up with configuering Nero? I'll check the config. Where is the log these days with Vista?

Damn it... I was having problems with Nero Home which failed to open a few times... and yes it was set back to PAL. Thanks for the hint.

NO... I take that back. This was not the problem. The last burned disk also was rejected by my DVD player as unsupported.

What was set for PAL in Nero were the video CDs... the DVD burns were set to NTSC as I must have done the first time I installed Nero.

Found my Nero Log. I've never been able to make heads or tails of them so I'll leave it to the experts. Thanks!

DMA needs to be on. Also 80 wire IDE cable a must.

What version of Nero did you have before 8?

DMA is on for the C drive... though it doesn't say what mode like XP did.

I checked all the channels and I can't find any DMA settings for the SATA optical drive in Device Manager but the disk did burn quickly at 6X... the slowest speed I could set. So doesn't that imply DMA must be on? I remember when my old PC fell back to PIO mode a few times and it would take an hour for a 4.5 gig DVD burn.

I don't have any ribbon cables. The PC is all SATA.

I'm starting off with a new PC... all fresh installs of everything. I had 7 Ultra on the old PC but it when I tried to install it on the new one I got an error if was Vista incompatible. I don't think any of 7 installed... and nothing shows up in Add/Delete programs nor in Program Files.

I have a similar issue. I have found that most of it is because the videos I am trying to burn are too large to fit on a single layer DVD.

That can't be it in my case since the videos don't even take up an entire disk. Guess I need to poke deeper into the settings of the various settings. It's odd that the disks test well in PIE/PIF tests. They don't play on my Pasonic standalone DVD player... nor are they recognized in WMP... not even the disk name. They open in DVDS... a program that can't be mentioned here by name. The disk name is recognized in the Nero Home viewer but won't play.

EDIT: But they WILL play on the VLC player and Nero Showtime4... but then started to skip.

somewhere between roxio, nero and vista you may have hosed all burning, that's an HP oem liteon drive?????

not sure where to start but I would download and install Imgburn first and use it to troubleshoot

whatever this mysterious shell program is just throws another variable into an already complicated equation

                        best to eliminate any variables

get whatever you are trying to burn working from your hard drive and verified then do the burn

Hi Chewy. The PC is an HP media center. It did come with Roxio preinstalled but I prefer Nero... or I did. I really don't like some features of Nero 8 much like Nero Home and the new Quickstart. Should I just uninstall Roxio? Or is there anything that Roxio can do that Nero can't?

As for OEM optical drive it's SATA.... an ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L SCSI drive.

not sure where to start but I would download and install Imgburn first and use it to troubleshoot

It's the trusty old DVDS. There used to be a forum here about it. It burns through Nero.

get whatever you are trying to burn working from your hard drive and verified then do the burn
I have the files used for my last burn and they play fine on VLC. Even the burned disks play on at least some of the PC's video players. So there's nothing in the Nero log that provides a clue?

I'll check out ImgBurn but I was checking out some other things first. Here's one quick new bit of info.... I did a direct burn of the video file using Nero Vision... and it played fine on the Panasonic DVD player. So there seems to be some issue using DVDS as an editing program that burns through Nero.
