General Question concerning DIVX and XP

I have a question about xp, I am running the thing, and when I attempt to install a divx codec I get a responce basically saying "you better not do that, micosoft has not tested it" Has anyone installed the Divx on there machine, and had any real adverse affects or is this microsoft being microsoft.

      that's funny

      xp with divx
the only complications i see are if you try to load multiple divx codecs. it is doable but difficult. but as for just loading an individual codec you should have no problems
i believe that the error is due to windows v.s. divx legalities

I've had no trouble at all playing DivX videos on XP systems, be it 3.11-compressed or 4.x/5.x-compressed ones.

silentshadow420, what do you mean by loading multiple divx codecs?

              divx5.0

when i loaded divx5.0 it removed or deactivated the divx3.11 and 4. i found some work around in the divx forum for this. I have also noticed that the new gknot upgrade has the work around implimented so the codec stays active on system after install. it is just an anoying thing that occured on my system. it prevented all encoding and playback with the other codecs. i seem to think the divx 3 codec has better playback then its upgrades. this could be due to not being configured correctly. but when i loaded divx 5. everything seems to default to that codec with out my authorization. and i found divx 5 in it's earlier stages was very buggy. i have only attempted one encode with the 5.02 so i have not yet tested if these errors have been corrected.
sorry for the late responce. have been extreamly busy lately.

silentshadow420, exactly the same problem I've had and it was not easy removing the bugged codec as well. One of the reasons why I've not bothered to upgrade to 5.x.

koyot20, you are probably missing a necessary codec for the movie file. You will indeed need to post the file information via virtualdub, so that we can find out what codec you need. Probably you need either the Hacked WMA codec (from 3.11a) or AC3 codec (Any Software DVD player installation or AC3 codec from a codec pack will do).
