adding a subtitle directly to a downloaded avi

I recently downloaded a spanish film however it had
no english subtitles. It is a 720MB .avi file. I
downloaded the movie's subtitle (tambien-english.sub)
but I don't know how to apply it. The site I got it
from said it was a MicroDVD format subtitle but I'm
currently using DivX Player 2.0 Alpha. I installed MicroDVD but can't get them to automatically run together. I've been doing research and the info I get pertains to the process form extracting some files from the DVD. The thing is, I never had the dvd (just the avi). How do I do this without any programming (I'm not a techie.
