avi movie drags

i recently d/l'd "HACKERS" while palying it back from the hard drive or cd the video stops but the audio plays on. then it catches up then does it again. what program can i use to fix the problem. new to the scene and i am building a machine this weekend to do dvd rips and conversions. any help or links would be appreciated on both of the above subjects.

You could try DivFix, DivX400, or DivX Antifreeze, all of which you'll find at:

You could also try loading the file into VirtualDub, set both "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying", and resave the file with a new name.
