    avi problems

I´m trying to convert avi to mpg using TMPGEnc, but when i choose the avi file with the browse button I get the message
"name of the file"can not open, or unsupported. When I try with Virtudub it crashes. Are all my avifiles damaged, and if so can I fix them? I have over 40 movies in avi format, that I was planing to make mpgs of. So please someone help me

"Are all my avifiles damaged, and if so can I fix them?"

Do they play under Windows Media Player (or any other player you may have)?

Yes, all files play well with Windows mediaplayer.
Of about 40 movies I´ve managed to convert only one.
My files are downloaded from kazza if that has anything to do with it.
Thanks for trying to help me.

If all of your files play properly under Windows Media Player, it should be obvious that THEY are NOT damaged.

If you right click on the files and select "Properties" and then click on the "Advanced" tab you'll see descriptive information about both the video codecs and audio codecs used.

Have you previously successfully used either VirtualDub or TMPGEnc?

I used TMPGEnc that time I got it right.
I rightclicked on the file like you told me to, and found out that I could convert 2 more movies. The ones I can covert says:
"DIVXMPG4 V3" next to Videoformat. The ones that don´t work says:unknown format.
Can I convert them to the "right" format, and then convert them to mpg? And if so how do I do that? Thanks for all the help so far setarip.

I'm afraid that the next step brings you into the realm of "not so easy"...

You'll either need to use a Hex Editor to examine what's known as the "FourCC" code in the file header, or search the DivX Digest website at:

Digital Digest DivX Xvid Section - List of recommended, top 10 DivX, Xvid and AVI articles, guides and software, latest news and updates

for a program that helps you alter this code (perhaps to the same code as those videos which you've successfully loaded and/or run) - which may then allow you to run the files.

            Let us know of your success ;>}

This method shows promise, but ......

I used the FourCC Coder, and instead of showing absolutely nothing in the screen (along with no audio)...it instead showed a white screen that ... and still no audio.

For the "Used Codec" I put in Div3, and for the "Description Codec" I put in Div4.

Why won't The Playa or MP play these files ?!?

No, that´s not me. I´m just Sad Luke. I don´t know that other guy. The advice you gave me seems to be out of my leauge, since I´m a newbie to computers in general. But I will give it a shot. Thanks for the help.
