mpeg1, mpeg2, avi to dvd video

ok I just got the sony dru500a burner. Nice burner but I need to know how I need to burn these mpeg 1, mpeg 2, avi files so that they will play in the dvd player. Right now I want to fit as much as I can on a dvd-r disc. Oddly my dvd player supports everything but DVD+R. So it supports dvd-r,dvd-rw,dvd+rw, vcd, svcd, etc. I was reading on the back of the dvd blank case and it says that I can fit up to 12 hours of video on one disc. Please let me know what I need to do to get this working. After I get over this hurdle I would like to know what media and what way I need to burn to get dvd-r videos to play on an x-box or a Playstation 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
