    cutting an avi in two

This is my first post here so 'hello' everyone.

I have a complete newbie question,
I've downloaded a divx avi movie and i'm using Nero5 to
burn it as a VCD for playback on my TV so my Luddite g/f
can watch it.(now cutting to the chase)

I need to cut the file in half as the resulting mpeg is to big
for a CD. I havent found any facility to split the output into two files in Nero so i guess i need somthing else.

I'm interested in ways to either split the avi or the
    resultant mpeg.
    Thanks for your help.

You can cut the AVI file into 2 parts, each which can be separately sent into Nero for conversion:
    1. Open file in Virtual/nandub
    2. Set both Video and Audio tabs to Direct Stream Copy
    3. Use the Mark In/Out buttons to specify the start and end of the first segment
    4. Go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the new file
    5. Repeat steps (1) - (4) for the second segment

          Hello,
I'm still trying to split this file to no avail.
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

          Thanks for your tolerance

Download and install the XviD codec - then follow the previously detailed procedure...
