notebooks, dvd's and divx

Ok i just wantted to know what the requirements were for divx movies, and DVD movies


I want to get a laptop to use just for the living room so i can play divx and my DVD's

But before i get one I want to know what specs I would need

All i know is:

The video Card must have Video Out
A dvd-Rom installed
but what else?

The video card with video out is not required if you want to play it on your laptop, but if you want to play it on your tv FROM your computer (you didnt specify) then yes you should get one.
You should have at least a pentium 2 II (althought some 1's work) for high quality movies (433MhZ should do).

so a p2 430 megs or higher?

if i got a cheap p2 notebook, would the performance utterly suck, or would i be fine.

For high resolution (704xX) divx5 movies the minimum requirement is closer to 1 GHz, maybe even more for a laptop using shared memory for the graphics card.

Ya a p2 433 should be good enough for divx3. But those high resolutions might be botchy, but SHOULD play.

so if i wanna avoid botchy and wanna crisp picture using either the notebook or the tv out function, a p3 would be needed?

Yes, a PIII would be recommended for somewhat better quality (as in, not botchy) and to ensure that your high-resolution movie plays better.

I agree that a PIII is the minimum you should target for. It will provide better performance (especially Office applications performance, compared to the P4) and also excellent value for money. P2 has long outlasted its usefulness in today's applications.

know where i could find a relatively cheap p3 notebook?
I know your going to ask me what my price limit would be, but it all depends on the unit in question.

Just know that all i would want it for is to play movies, cd and dvds.... so i do not need any extras really.
