    Here's one way....

    Frameserving

    You will need three progs...VirtualDub TMPGEnc and VobSub

    Locate VDub dir. and doubleclick on AuxSetup.exe.Then Install Handler
    Open .avi in VDub and set Video tab to Full Processing Mode
    Then select Filters from the video dropdown menu.
    Press add and select TextSub.Open subfile and press OK.
    File-->Start Frame Server.Give it a name (something.vdr<--.VDR is important)and press start.

    Open .vdr file in TMPGEnc and select proper template(or set up manually).
    Wait until encoding is finished and you will have subs on VCD.

      Is this to project the subtitles onto the mpg file or to make a stand alone subtitle file? Is the other way possible in some way too?

      Does this work with SVCD too?

      Thanks!

        "Is this to project the subtitles onto the mpg file or to make a stand alone subtitle file?"

        This method makes a permanent sub, because the sub is encoded into the movie.

        "Does this work with SVCD too?"

        Yes...

              Ok I got this to work until when I chose input file in tmpgenc. It accepted the vbr file as video input but not as audio input so there was no sound in the resulting file. Also I think the subs got a bit out of sync, but it was hard to tell.

              Any ideas?

              Thanks!

                I tried it with another divx file and it worked fine! It must have been non-standard sound on the first one.

                  TMPGEnc doesn't support VBR.

                  Load .avi in VDub.
                  Set Audio tab to Full Processing Mode
                  "In" Audio, Conversion is set to 44,100Hz and Compression to Uncompressed PCM
                  File-->Save WAV....

                  Load wav as audio source in TMPGEnc...

                    (oops, I meant the VRB-file of course.)

                    In this first movie, I think the audio might be in some ac3 format?
                    When I try to rip the sound in VD, I get this error:

                    "The Requested Audio Compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format."

                    What do you think?

                      "(oops, I meant the VRB-file of course.)"

                      If you're referring to the frameserver file,you mean VDR

                      "What do you think?"

                      I think ac3 too.
                      Open file in VDub.
                      File-->File Information.
                      Audio Stream-->Compression is Unknown(tag2000), the audio stream is ac3.

                      NanDub supports ac3,but is(in my experience)unable to save the stream in uncompressed wav.

                      You may want to use progs like BeSweet to do the .ac3 to .wav conversion.
                      Pesonally I use the Command line based prog Azid.

                          Is VobSub installed with the VDub plug-ins?

                            Yes, the only thing I can find about sub is VobSub 223 in Add filter.

                              If installed correctly you should be able to select TextSub.
