Taking several avi's and making a dvd

I've read a few posts but haven't found my answer yet.

What I'm trying to do is take several avi files and make a dvd. I'm using the software that came with my DVD burner ( Sony DRU-500a ), Sonic MyDVD. When I used to make VCDs with Nero, it encoded the video which took around 1 hr. When I use Sonic MyDVD, I can only fit 3 files before it gets full. However, if I place all 26 avi files, I can do an option called Make dvd folder, what this does is transcode ( not sure what this means ) my avi files. Well it's been taking a long time, I left it on overnight, is transcoding supposed to convert my avi movies into dvd format files so I can fit all 26 avi files onto the dvd? like Nero did with my VCD's.

I think so. You could also try transcoding with TMPGEnc (select the appropriate dvd template) or CCE (supposedly faster but much more expensive) and simply burn with MYDVD.

When I import an avi file into Sonic MyDVD, it makes the file about 1GB in size and I can't fit more than 3. Why is it doing this?

The .avi files I'm using are around 111mb in size

It is probably transcoding the avi files to dvd mpeg-2 format, hence causing a dramatic increase in size.

Got everything working smoothly and on my way to making my first dvd Just one question about file size. I'm using TMPGEnc Plus to encode my avi files into mpg's. I'm using MPEG II, 720x480, 29.97fps, CQ 65 ( not sure what that is ), Layer-2, 48000Hz, 384Kbps. A majority of the files encode to around 400mbs. I get a few files up in the 1GB range, why is that? All the parameters for encoding are the same.

          Confusing

"I get a few files up in the 1GB range, why is that?"

            A few possibilities:

The original .AVIs are longer (running time) than the others
The original .AVIs have substantially more action/movement
The original .AVIs have more color/less black space
The original .AVIs were encoded at a higher bitrate
