    AVI Audio on virtualdub

Hopefully someone can help with this. When I am using virtualdub I get the message "Virtualdub has detected an improper VBP audio encoding in the source avi file........recompress with a constants bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 136.2 +- 19.2 kps)."
Basically after sticking it through virtualdub the speach and lip movement dont match. I can uncompress the audio into a wav file but dont know how to recompress with a constant bit rate encoder. Is this another program I need.
Once I have done this how do I merge the sound back to the film, which I have seperated as a film with no audio.

    Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use NanDub (NOT VirtualDub) to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into NanDub
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" - and choose "Uncompressed PCM (.WAV)"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).

Then close NanDub and restart it
    Set "Audio" to "No audio"
    Load your silent .AVI
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Under "Audio" click on "WAV Audio" and load your .WAV
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the appropriate .MP3 settings. Click on "OK"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and save your file with a new filename.

Hi, thanks for replying. I have downloaded a version of NANDUB, it did not say which one it was. I carried out your instructions but under the compression option on audio there was not a "Uncompressed PCM (.WAV)" option. There was a <No compression (PCM) > option. When I try to save this as a wav file the processing screen flashes up for a second and then disappears. The .wav file left behind has a 0kb value.

Do I need extra codec to get the "Uncompressed PCM (.WAV)" option or a higher version of NANDUB.

Thanks again for your help. Your site has been a godsend for all my problems.

The EXACT phrase under the "Compression" section of the "Audio" dropdown menu is "No compression(PCM)"

Sorry to be a pain as I guess my questions are making me look a bit stupid now but I cant get this .wav file created under NANDUB. When I click on no compression under the audio option the format information box has all the values set to zero which I think is what is causing the wave file I create to only have 850kb. Using virtualdub I note that when I click on no compression on virtualdub using the same avi file I note that the format information brings back values of
          Bytes per block : 4
data rate : 192000 bytes per second
          granularity : 48000.0 blocks/sec

All of these values are 0 on NANDUB.

          Thanks for your help.

Perhaps you somehow have a non-functional setup of NanDub. Try downloading and using VirtualDubMod instead...

I am making some progress. I have downloaded virtualdubmod 1.14.13.1. From this I created an uncompressed .wav file and and an avi file with no sound.
When I originally loaded the avi into virtual dub it said I should recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. it then gives these figures (bitrate 122.80 +- 33.80 kbps). This is what I am not sure about.
On virtualdubmod. I opened the avi file (with no sound) and then chose wav audio. Then I chose full processing mode for audio. Then I chose MPEG layer 3. I am then not sure what option to choose here. I chose what I thought was the highest quality
              320kbit/s, 48000hz, stereo, 40kb/s. I then saved the file.
This cant be correct as the audio and lip movement is still way out of sync.
I sincerely apologise if I am doing something stupid and wasting your time. All help is much appreciated.

I just noticed - you haven't said whether your ORIGINAL file was properly synchronized. Was it?

                  Just a quick word,

If you're audio and video was in sync in the first place why don't you just use TMPGENC to put the two seperate files you've ripped back together again, i have done this on many occasions and it normally works for me.

                    thanks again for all replies.

On the original file I downloaded the audio is in sync with the video.
Can I just stick this original file into TPMG to create my MPEG 2 file.
Some of the files that I have come in two parts and I need to append them together using virtualdub. If I just did a direct copy would they stay in sync or would virtualdub still try to reformat the VBR audio.
Someone told me that you always had to uncompress the audio before sticking it through TPMGenc. I know for AC3 files I just stick the downloaded avi direct into TPMGenc can I do this for all.

Once again thanks to all on the forum who have taken time to read and reply

load the silent video file into tmpgenc and load the .wav file (the box below the video) in the audio box. 2 separate files you encode to make one mpg.

Unfortunately you can't - because TMPGEnc cannot process a VBR-.MP3 audiostream...

Like the others said this is not possible.....But basically you are nearly there, all you need to do now is get your 2 seperate files (The video on 1 file & The other containing the audio) and proceed to TMPGENC.

Now when you go to load your avi into it load the video file with no sound in it, you will now see that TMPGENC recognises there isn't any audio in this file. now click browse next to audio and load up the .wav file with the audio in it.

From there proceed as you normally would with a single avi file and the results should be an in-sync mpeg!!!!

                          Good luck.....

(I know the others explained this already really but i just thought i'd throw a bit detail in for you in case you were getting confused)

                          Steve.

Thanks to you all who replied.

I put both the avi file and the wav file into tmpgenc and now have a working mpeg file.

The help that this site provides beginners like myself is great and I really appreciate it.
