the firewire upload (well not the cable but the programs pushing it trhu) can also be quite finicky sometimes regarding the sizes of your video, here are the standard DV sizes for NTSC
video:
720x480 - cropped 704x480 - 29.97 fps
that goes for 4:3, 5:1 and 16:9
your sound is 48 hz or 32 hz
for your codec, go to a site that is dedicated to that, I did a search for "codec" with Copernic, there are lots out there, sorry did not keep a link but will look around
