An update and clarification on my situation. I still need help

Okay, very specifically the problem I am experiancing is with the DivX Player. I tried using Virtual Dub to re-encode the file using the 5.0.3 codec and then used GSpot to check the file. GSpot confirmed that there should be no problems but the DivX Player won't open the file. Any help would be appreciated.

if you selected n-pass, 1st pass during the encoding in vdub, you get as a result a pile of data that is used in n-pass, nth pass... the result file has .avi extension, but it's no movie/avi file. you need to finish the encoding by second pass (or third, etc) to gain real .avi file
...this MIGHT not be the best picture that I have...

Well, thanks for all the suggestions and tips, both in this post and the previous. I finally figured it out, and of course it was something I had already checked, just not well enough I guess. Thanks again.
