I have downloaded some mpeg files that are named in the format of "file.mpg.001" and "file.mpg.002" and so on. I am assuming that this is a split mpeg movie but am at a loss as to how to join it back together. Anyone give me a clue, please?

try to rename your files like so
"file001.mpg"
"file002.mpg"
Without the quotes
Because that is not a valid format -
They were downloaded from USENET with that naming convention so I didn't know if there was a splitter out there that created multiple files out of one big mpeg.
