    AVI>CD-R>DVD Player

    Hi!

    Here's my newbie question:

Well, I'd like to watch some of my .AVI files in my big screen TV, through the DVD-Player.
I only have a CD-R/RW in my PC.

Is there a way I can convert them to some format wich I can burn into a CD-R and get my DVD-Player to read the CD-R files (movies)??

    I'd appreciate any help

ps: can I ask another question? What should I do to burn a 714MB movie into a 80min CD (702MB)??? Do I have to cut something from the movie? How?

You need to use TMPGEnc to encode it to a VCD (Video CD). You can convert you AVI to VCD compliant files using TMPGEnc and you can use Nero or Roxio Easy CD Creator to burn them as a Video-CD.. Make sure you don't just burn it as a data CD but like a said a VCD or Video-CD

What about the size? Does the file get any bigger after he is converted to VCD?

There are a lot of different formats, but it's not sure your dvd-player supports them all:

        VCD: 74min/CD
        XVCD: 28-74 min/CD
        SVCD: 35-60 min/CD
        XSVCD: 15-35 min/CD
        miniDVD: 8-25 min/CD

VCD and SVCD are a standard that most dvd-players support. XVCD and SVCD simply use a higher bitrate and/or higher resolution than standard-(S)VCDs. For a miniDVD you create a normal DVD that has a size of 700MB or less and burn it to a CD-R. f you have not much experience with video-encoding, you should first create a standard-VCD or SVCD.

I have no experience at all!
Do you have any tip for me?

By the way, is there a way to insert subtitles in this VCD wich the DVD Player will also recognize and make the option for subtitles available?

For subtitles with VCD you have to make permanant subtitles on the AVI using VirtualDub.

                  Oh, well...

There are tons of options in Virtual Dub.

What are the steps I gotta take to fix my subtitle (*.sub) into a specific .AVI file, in order to convert it to SVCD using TMPGEnc?

Edit: I already got subtitles for my movie in *.sub format (VobSub). Then I downloaded a filter to add subtitles in Virtual Dub. He asks for .ssa (Sub Station Alpha) subtitles, and I already converted the *.sub to *.ssa (using SUBTITLE WORKSHOP program) - but I didn't have any success adding them to the movie!

                  FILTER README:
"To use it, go to Video > Filters and add the "subtitler" filter. You'll
then be able to select a script filename and optionally toggle text
antialiasing. Subtitler accepts Sub Station Alpha V2.x and V4.x
scripts. Text is then applied to the outgoing AVI according to the script."

It didn't work!! Can't see subtitles in the movie!!
                  Help!!

Download VobSub and this will install plugins for VirtualDub and AVISynth.

During the install, open utilities and tick VirtualDub. This will add a filter in VirtualDub (Video/filters/textsub)

Now you can encode your *.sub to avi.

AVISynth is my perfered way, but that's another tread.

Hey, just one more thing, how do I actually SAVE the subtitle PERMANENTLY in the movie? (it's .mpg)

                          ???

EDIT: I chose SAVE AS AVI, but in the current speed it will take an eternity to finish it!!!
Is there a way to quick-save the subtitles without changing the original format of the file (in this case, MPEG)?

EDIT2: WOW! I wouldn't be able to store such file size even if I had a 120TB HD!! What is VirtualDub doing?
Come on, I just want to permanently save the subtitles, just the subtitles, how do I do this?
I want the movie to remain the same format and size. Please, help.

Not quite sure I understand that!

Sounds like your resaving it "uncompressed". That will result in a HUGH file, as you found out.

Ok, I would suggest using AVISynth but it a bit more tricker to set up.

                              1. Download AVISynth. Get 2.0x version)

                              2. Open notepad and type the following:

                              LoadPlugin(x:\path\textsub.vdf)
                              Directshowsource("c:\temp\movie.mpg")
                              textsub(x:"\path\subtitles.sub)

Change the above so the location matches the file on your hdd.

Save the above with a *.avs extension....eg...."Movie.avs"

                              3. Open the avs file in VirtualDub

                              =======================

                              Well, that the general idea.
If you can't do the above, I suggest just doing what I first suggested but set up the video compression.
                              Good luck man.
