how do i split an avi into two files to burn with nero to svcd

i want to split an avi into 2 and then use nero to automatically convert my divx into svcd.

Splitting with VirtualDubMod or NanDub


1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDubMod or NanDub
2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
3) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
4) Move slider to approximate halfway point
5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
6) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
7) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie1of2.avi").
8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Move to End"
10) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End"
11) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie2of2.avi").

i'm having a problem. i splitted the avi and the first half came out to be 309 megs and a little under 50 minutes. when i try to burn using nero as vcd, everything was fine and dandy. but when i tried using nero to burn an svcd, intially it said 618 megs. but after it encoded, it says that i don't have enough space on my cd. then when i discard, nero shows it as 782 megs. i don't understand why it did that. below are my url to the screenies of the before, middle, and after. copy paste the url to another browser please....sorry about that.

Perhaps you'll just have to split your .AVI into three, rather than two, parts...

just tried splitting another movie and converting it with nero. same thing happened. it's okay with vcd but too big with svcd. maybe i'm doing something wrong. is there some special option i need to do in nero when i convert it?

That's because compliant MPEG-2SuperVideoCDs (SVCDs) REQUIRE almost twice as much space (filesize) versus compliant MPEG-1VideoCDs (VCDs)...

I have no way of knowing what these "other people" are doing - perhaps another poster does.

I have simply given you information regarding COMPLIANT formats...

The problem is with you encoding in svcd format
that nero does it standart
which means with a bitrate
of around 2363 kbits/sec in video stream
and 224 kbits/ sec in audio stream.

This results in a videofile of 42 min.
sized about 800 mbyte that can be burned on a normal 700 mb disk
using the SVCD option in NERO 5.xx
If you want to stick to NERO upgrade to
Nero 6 ultra .
Here you can
"lower" your encoding bitrate for
"extended" play SVCDs (50 to 60 min.). But note that you might have problems
to play these disks on older DVD stand alone players!

But iI recommend that you start using
tools that have been specially designed for mpeg2 encoding
such as Tmpeg or the Cinema Craft Encoder!!

Using these tools to create an extended play SVCD does not always mean a great loss of quality... since you can run several encoding passes, which will reduce filesize.

Using these tools I also recommend
to get yourself some information
about VCD and SVCD standarts..

for example a variable 2000 kbits videostream 192 kbits audiostream
480x576 resolution at 25frames/sec for PAL
or 480x480 resolution at NTSC
will still result in a proper SVCD about 52 minutes.
