Can someone help this poor noob??

My computer is a measly 380mhz but avi with resolutions around 576 x 240, it runs smoothly, but the quality sux (but im not complaining) Movies with resolutions 640x 480, the frames drop and the audio moves ahead so the ppl mouth's move when they're not talking. but the quality looks really good, like dvd while the other one looks like a 70's movie. So how can i change the dvd quality to the 70's movie quality so it can run smoothly on my pc? does the resolution have anything to do with it? please help.

considering your avi contains a divx or xvid video stream, you can try ffdshow - it takes less cpu.
I'm not saying it will solve all playback problems because a 380mhz cpu can't do easily the job.

      - If you only want playback, then the video card and its parameters are very important
      - Lowering screen resolution and color depth takes some weight from the video card
      - Using a simple player (such as WMP6.4) helps
      - In the decoder filter properties you can optimize playback (in mplayer2: file-properties-advanced-DivX decoder filter-properties-set quality level to min)
      - DivX performs better than Xvid on slower systems

for playing divx and xvid movies
        I reccomend using the BSplayer
        and not Windows media player
        or the DIvxPlayer Alpha.
it does need the least amount of system resources as far as I know.

If you are not sure which codecs
to install use the nimo codec pack
        in the LITE version

once you started your movie with that,
you can easily adjust the playback parameters of the used codec
        by rightklicking on the movie
        and changing the codec property
        defaults (such as playback quality)

i have a PII333 on a ATI 4mb gfx card (incl. movies above 576 x 240, seen on a 32bit 1024x768 screen resolution), and i haven't had any serious playback problems so far, so i wouldn't be so sure it's the hardware problem.

hé MPS I'm pretty sure u use a linux only-for-video-playback scratch to make it work

i would have to contradict shiny#3, and suggest using, Windows Media Player Classic, as i have had great success personally.

                  agree HOF
MPlayer2.exe (aka WMP 6.4) is still the best M$ can offer.

                    To MPS

                    Just a point of information:

Although "Windows Media Classic" is a "lookalike" player with additional functions, it is not the same as Windows Media Player v.6.4 (still my favorite) - nor is it a Microsoft product...
