Can't get AVI to playback

Hi folks. New here. I have spent my entire Saturday it seems downloading corrupt files. I have installed FFDSHOW(I have no idea what that did), and GSPOT. When I open the movies in GSPOT it gives me what the problem is,(ie. truncated file, or bad chunk in the frame data) but I have no idea how to fix it. Is there any software that can do the trick or do I have to just keep dnlding until I get a good file?
